Ryanair flight lands at military base by mistake

A pilot has been questioned after a Ryanair flight with 39 passengers aboard landed at a military airbase by mistake.

The flight from Liverpool, operated by Eirjet on behalf of the budget carrier, had been due to land at City of Derry airport in Northern Ireland.

It put down instead at neighbouring Ballykelly airfield, five miles short of its intended destination.

Passengers and their luggage were taken off, leaving the jet grounded on the orders of aviation authorities, who demanded an immediate investigation.

Ryanair confirmed the Airbus A320 had landed at the military base mistakenly and has called for a full inquiry.

The airline said in a statement: "Flight FR9884, operated by Eirjet on behalf of Ryanair, landed safely at Ballykelly airport instead of City of Derry airport at 14.40 today.

"This incident arose as a result of an error by the Eirjet's pilot who mistakenly believed he was on a visual approach to City of Derry airport.

"The Eirjet pilot was cleared by air traffic control in City of Derry for a visual approach and mistook the nearby Ballykelly for City of Derry.

"All passengers disembarked the aircraft normally and were coached to City of Derry airport. Ryanair has notified both the IAA (Irish Aviation Authority) and CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) of this Eirjet error.

"We have also asked Eirjet ... to carry out a full investigation into this matter as in over seven years of Ryanair flights into City of Derry airport and over 20 years of Ryanair-operated flights such a mistake has never occurred before."[/b]

Ryanair, Europe’s largest low fares airline, today (Saturday, 1st April 2006) announced its 16th European base, in Derry Ballykelly airport.

On Wednesday last, the independent surveyors, Eirjet, working on behalf of Ryanair held an impromptu meeting with representatives from Ballykelly Airport Loading and Logistics Services (BALLS). The military precision of the operation, un-congested, low cost facilities, impeccable turn out and well-drilled staff led Eirjet to advise Ryanair that these were clearly people it could do business with.

Announcing the new base today, Leo Hairy Camel, Ryanair’s CEO designate said:

Since its inception, Ryanair has been waging war on high cost airports, and our announcement today of a new base at Costa Del Ballykelly is just another of our military manoeuvres to continue to lower fares for European consumers. Ballykelly Airport is a breath of fresh air and this development marks the demise of Taj-Mahal airports run by fat cats. Ballykelly secured this base by fluke despite intense competition from over 50 airports throughout Europe. Airport operators the length and breadth of Europe are today taking note that the future of airports lies in simple, functional, low cost facilities. posadka si vyzadala vizualni problizeni a tim to bylo bohuzel dane. Zadny dispecer nenese a nemuze nest odpovednost za to, ze posadka udela neco spatne, i kdyz tady to nakonec bylo docela usmevne s dobrym koncem.
Na druhou stranu, za jistych okolnosti muze byt dispecer ten, ktery pote, co eroplanu rekne CLEARED TO LAND a za minutu, dve nebo pul ho stale nema v dohledu v ocekavanem miste (za predpokladu dobreho pocasi, coz asi bylo, kdyz si vyzadali visual approach) tak je zacne hledat a treba ho to napadne, kdyz je uvidi na radaru s malo feetama altitude zrovna v miste, kde je osa toho letiste, ktere ma kousek od sebe a ktere ho obvykle akorat otravuje,ze furt musi koordinovat. Urcite tady mame na foru profiky dispecery, (ja jsem v podstate trosku vic pouceny laik), kteri nam toho muzou rict vic. Ale myslim, ze pokud to provozni a jina situace umoznuje, tak kazdy dispecer se na to pristavajici letadlo podiva.

ale jinak bych rekl, ze takove pripady se staly nekolikrat a jeste mockrat stanou, ted me napadl pripad jednoho major Ceskeho letectva, ktery pristal s L-39 na malem zemedelskem letisti jen par kilometru pred LKKU. Na jeho obranu je ale potreba uvest, ze zdaleka nebyl prvni, kdo si to popletl, ta asfaltova praskarska plocha uz toho videla vic

největší "úlet" o kterým jsem četl. Linka z Barcelony do Sanitago de Compostela (severozápad španělska) přistála omylem v Seville (jih), což je o 700 km jinde
