Lufthansa Italia to stop operation due to mounting losses

Frankfurt / Milan, 23 May 2011 – The Lufthansa Italia brand will cease operation from 29 October 2011 due to mounting losses.
From this date, Lufthansa customers in Italy will have the choice between either connecting at our hubs in Frankfurt and Munich or flying with someone else. The A319 currently flying for Lufthansa Italia will be used somewhere else where they can actually make a profit.
Because of the lack of direct flights more people will now have to fly between Italy and the Lufthansa hubs. We will call this effect double-digit growth. Air Dolomiti will increase the number of flights to make the connection experience less painful.

Lufthansa CEO and Chairman Christoph Franz:"It just wasn't working. Instead of real passengers we only got Flyertalkers making use of our super low business fares flying from cities I never heard of before to places they didn't actually need to go. Lounge costs went through the roof and in addition to our Cessna Hons (TM) our First Class Terminal in Frankfurt is now crowded by LHI Hons (R) which has let to complaints from our regular frequent flyers, mainly engineers on construction sites in Shanghai on bi weekly rotation. "
