Bangkok Suvarnabhumi - Phuket

THAI INTERNATIONAL AIRWAYS 1st (test) operations from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport to Phuket
NBK – HKT
29th July 2549 (2006)

Bangkok international airport ageing Don Muang (BKK) will be shortly replaced by the newer Suvarnabumi airport. The date of actual operations has been postponed several times and few people know the actual start of operations. Thai International Airways however had a special offer only on the 29th from and to the newly constructed super airport Bangkok Suvarnabumi (NBK).

Soft opening of NBK will be the 28th of September 2006. That’s 2 days after I fly back to Bangkok from Prague but many more trips to come from the new airport I hope as I take at least 4-5 flights a month.

The airport’s website is still part of www.airportthai.co.th or the AOT-Airports of Thailand authority. It doesn’t offer that much but an actual website is planned once operations are official with online information as well as online services.

This trip report will show the general experience of the new airport by a regular passenger (frequent flyer bit not a professional in aviation) however many details will definitely change upon FULL operations of the airfield including traffic, check in, passport control….etc…

Reservation

I was surprised that the offer has been offered ONLY on the internet. I live in Bangkok and haven’t seen ANY promotion for this flight elsewhere. After my friend informing me, I saw the following flights that departed/arrived to NBK only on that day.

After a while I noticed that many more airlines are as well offering the same tests flights from/to Suvarnabhumi airport namely Nok Air (Thai airways low cost subsidiary), 12GO and maybe Bangkok air. All rates are identical with the 1999THB for a flight one way. In total there was supposed to be around 26 flights that day.

Thai Airways International Public Company Limited invites its customers to travel on historic flights to Suvarnabhumi Airport. Reservations and tickets for the first commercial flights available from July 1, 2006.
Mr. Vasing Kittikul, Thai’s Executive Vice President, Commercial said that THAI will operate 3 domestic flights to Suvarnabhumi Airport to give passengers the opportunity to experience Thai’s products and services at Suvarnabhumi on July 29, 2006. Reservations for air tickets will be available from July 1, 2006 and part of the proceeds from ticket sales will be collected by the Airports of Thailand from airlines who will operate to Suvarnabhumi on 29th July, 2006, for presentation to His Majesty the King on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of Accession to the Throne.
The first commercial flights to Suvarnabhumi Airport will allow passengers from Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket to travel via Suvarnabhumi Airport on July 29, 2006, with special fares as follows:

Route - Y Class - C Class
Suvarnabhumi – Phuket - 1,999 - 2,999
Phuket - Suvarnabhumi - 1,999 - 2,999
Chiang Mai - Suvarnabhumi - 1,999 - 2,999
Suvarnabhumi – Phuket – Don Muang - 3,999 - 5,999
Chiang Mai – Suvarnabhumi/Don Muang – Chiang Mai - 3,999 - 5,999

Passengers traveling on all flights to Suvarnabhumi Airport on July 29, 2006, will receive a special boarding pass and a certificate from THAI as souvenirs to mark the special occasion.

Tickets are only available from all THAI sales offices in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket. Passengers may make reservations from July 1, 2006 through the 24-hour reservation service at tel. 02 356-1111 and 02 628-2000.

In addition, THAI will provide check in services as well as ground support/ground handling services for all airlines who will operate to Suvarnabhumi on July 29, 2006, free of charge. For airlines operating smaller aircraft that will have to park at a remote bay, THAI will provide transportation for their passengers from the aircraft to the terminal.
THAI’s Techical Department has also arranged for engineers and technicians to provide technical services to THAI’s aircraft as well as those of THAI’s customer airlines at Suvarnabhumi on 29th July, 2006.

After purchasing the ticket at Thai office in Silom, I was handed a Royale electronic Ticket (see pic). Unfortunately NO seat allocation is permitted on domestic flights! But I gather that all passengers will arrive WAY in advance to check out the airport and get a chance to have a window seat.

My flight was the NBK-HKT in the afternoon (special Thai airways Flight number TG 2772). I decided that I will stay one day and return normally to BKK (DonMuang). I thought that I will not be able to get a seat as I made reservations way after this offer was posted on www but only Business class was booked full and the morning flight as well. They had 4 flights to HKT from NBK this day. The price including taxes was 3999Thai Baht (apx. EUR 83 for a return tckt)

Way to airport and airport location

The airport is not dramatically further from the city. It is actually the same distance only Don Muang. The current airport is located exactly 24km north west of the CBD (Central Business district) with only 1 toll way (paid elevated highway). A Trip by taxi takes around 30 minutes on a good day with taxi charges of apx. 180THB + 40 + 20THB for toll ways.

NBK airport is located officially 25 km in the south eastern part of the Bangkok and is served with 2 tollways. At the moment the airport is not open so I cannot really say if the traffic will come to a stand still as this is the direction from Bangkok to the Chonburi province (To Bang Na and Pattaya) which is usually very crowded. Many people expect some sort of trouble in this case when the airport will be in full operations and thousands of cars, buses and taxis will be heading there daily.

As said there are two highways serving the airport. The first is the highway taking you to Phraram 9 and the other route is to the Bangna trat. Both routes will require to go through 2 highway booths of 40THB + 20THB and the second route 40THB + 25THB.

I took the first route as I live in Sathorn in the heart of the Central Business District and Silom. The trip is a bit more complicated than to Don Muang as BKK airport was almost a straight line from the CBD and the trip was fairly quick. The route to Suvarnabhumi airport is however filled with twists and turns and this to my surprise added a considerable number of KMs to the official distance as we will see later on.

This is the begining of the first toll was on the direction to Phraram 9. This part is also used to go to the old Don Muang airport only we will turn right in about a couple km further on.

After turning away from the tollway that takes you to Ayuttaya and Don Muang. We turn to Phraram 9 and these are the gates to the second tool way that takes you to Chonburi province and Pattaya

On the way we can see that work on the extension of the BTS Sky train is under way. However it seems from what Ive seen is that it will také a couple of years more to finish everything as its a rather long way. The official opening is supposed to be sometime in Mid 2007.

The taxi ride took more than I though as there were some twists and turns. This all added more than 10km more to the trip distance as you see on the upper top right side (36.4km) and the total cost was 211THB which is less than 5 EUR

The older Donmuang was always around 25-26KM with the cost of 150THB

Obrázek

The sky train being extended to the airport will be great though as the traffic in Bangkok is quite nerve wrecking

First impressions

First impressions are quite favorable as the terminal was visible from far away and seemed quite airy and spacious. Once you come near you can see how impressive and big the main terminal building is.

Departure hall

Departure hall is elevated on the top floor of the terminal building. The arrivals are on the sub floor under the departures and finally the access to the busses etc.. will be on the ground floor. All these floors are serviced by wide highways and access is simple.

The departure hall is impressive and BIG. There are around ten check in islands. Mostly you can see glass, steel and TONS of concrete. All levels are connected with various escalators, elevators and stairs. The over all design is impressive however cold and sterile. I noticed that the air-condition is odd as cold air is emitted from metal boxes on the floor (boxes act as well as speakers for music) however when you use the escalators to the upper floors to the soon to be food court you can immediately feel rise in temperature as hot air rises and kept up. I seem to see NO air-condition vents on the ceiling …only ventilation fans.

Check in

Check in counters follow the same style as in Don Muang where Islands of individual check in counters are located (same as in PRG, KUL, ICN and SIN). There are around Ten huge islands under letter codes AB, CD, EF, GH, IJ….etc… This airways will have the first AB CD with special business class and first class "sit down" check in

The distances again are vast so it will take you some effort and time to get from one end to the other in the terminal hall…

Passport control

Passport control in the older BKK is considered by me the Achilles heel of the airport. Whether it was departure or arrival, the process always took a long time (30-45minutes on a good day). Thai officials somehow refuse to rely on computers to do the process so besides putting the passport in the electronic reader they have to input many things themselves and take the passengers picture. So it takes min. 5-7 minutes per passenger (a stark contrast to Singapore for example).

Since our flight was domestic so there was no passport control… only check ID of passangers. The passport control booths however looks fresh and a bit similar to the ones in the EU style (see through booths).

Duty free shops

The airport was not open for operations for international flights so it was even a surprise for me to see that the international terminal interior was far from finished. It will také only a couple of months to get all the shops ready as it looked that there will be hundreds of shops through the entire departure terminal tube.

Going down to the domestic floor. If you fly international then you will go straight on to the same floor as check in.
