Teď bude zajímavé, o kolik zlevní ČSA letenky do Cologne/Bonnu.

No možná konkurencí bude rychlejší proudový Airbus oproti pomalemu vrtulovému ATRku ČSA a ČSA budou muset nasadit proudový Boeing 737.

After having followed the discussions here, I´d like to answer on this topic. Apologies for the answer in English, but if I would try to do so in Czech, you all would have to laugh.
The Prague route until now proves to be most sucessful out of the three new Germanwings routes which will be inaugurated in April on a daily basis (EDI, VCE and PRG). In no more than a week Germanwings had over 12000 bookings for this route (which is more than CSA trasported on this route thru 2002).
CSA could in fact be the tragical hero of this new Germanwings route. They had launched the route in last year's April after the suspension of Lufthansa the year before. In cooperation with the airport authority of Cologne who were very interested in this route they operate the route with nightstop in order to provide german business travellers a connection for one-day trips.
The route has proved successful and the average load factor has been well above 50 per cent from the very beginning. What in my view could be a problem for this route is the probably small number of high-yield passengers. Over 50 per cent of the passengers use Prague as connecting airport and not final destination. This traffic well is interesting for hub airlines, but delivers relatively small yields and so requires higher load factors.
CSA could be even more affected by the Germanwings flights. At that afternoon flight times, their flight is not really competing to the CSA flight although the leg PRG-CGN at 4pm could be interesting for biz travellers. The question will be how many travellers are more flexible in time and would change to Germanwings. In total, I expect that CSA and LH are gonna loose big parts of their more time flexible customers. This especially on the Dusseldorf-Prague route which -due to the bigger passenger flows and therefore capacity on this route- previously had the more attractive fares (at least LH always has proved cheaper from DUS than from CGN when I saught a flight to Prague). No question this already price sensitive customers in the past will change if they can save even more.
However, there is no strategy for Lufthansa and CSA to set the competitive prices because there cost structure does not allow price competition.
The confrontation will at latest get hard when Germanwings introduces a second daily flight which could happen in early 2004.
Some words on Germanwings: They are really an attractive low fare airline - their position is really a premium position compared to Easyjet (and previously Go) and Ryanair. The 5 Airbus A319 all received a completely new interior before they started operations in last October with leather seats. Their average age is at some 4 years and they all have operated their whole lifetime for the same airline. Germanwings only is the new division name for Eurowings Flug, a subsidiary of Eurowings (they are operating regional flights for Lufthansa). When Eurowings Flug changed their business model from charter flights to low cost flights, they also introduced the new name Germanwings. The sixth plane, an Airbus A320 did not receive new interior. This is the only plane previously operated by Lufthansa and still has Lufthansa interior -> this means plenty of leg room as this plane has only Y150 seats.
Well, you have mentioned that you have to pay for food. But it is relatively cheap (compared with Ryanair and Easyjet) and good (as they are catered by LSG - the Lufthansa Catering division).
So, let's wait until April when they will appear at Prague. I am one of the 12000 who already have bought a ticket.
Aahh: And on the German low cost scene. There are three big players who will fight for the market. Germanwings (subsidiary of Eurowings; Lufthansa has a 24,9 share on Eurowings), Hapag Lloyd Express -HLX (subsidiary of TUI, Germany's biggest tour operator) and Air Berlin (Germany's biggest charter airline).
HLX and Germanwings are just digging into the most interesting low cost market in Germany- the region around Dusseldorf and Cologne, a very dense agglomeration (some 15 Mio people can reach Cologne within one hour). Air Berlin instead is snapping the most attractive routes of the other airports.
I would not predict big success for other tiny airlines like Low Fare Jet and Berlinjet who do not have the market power like the big other three (and remember, also Easyjet and Ryanair are playing in Germany)...

Tom,
let me to write you in English and make you smiling for a while. From your post I got feelings that it's more comfortable to read poor English rather then Czech.
You're in fact right. Show me a national flag carrier which haven't suffered from low-cost competition. Well the experiences are very good in PRG. OK for exmaple bangs on its STN presence despite competition from Go (EasyJet). OK even didn't reduced frequencies to BTS despite SkyEurope (because they reduce the fares on this route which is the exact route I'm not sure is the right to compete with a low cost airline).
The OK's PRG-CGN route will suffer but I think the co-operation with LH and especially as you mentioned the huge population with easy access to CGN will be positive factors for OK.
I don't agree with you that transfer pax are low-yield. Maybe they are lower but not low. CGN has poor if any connection regarding eastwards, so the transfer pax of Ok on that flight could easily be business as well.
I'm following you regarding Germanwings, HappagLloyd Express and Air Berlin topic. Nor BerlinJet hasn't even it's own planes!! The pax are flown for them by another airline!
